Jeff Brown has emerged as one of the freshest and most soulful instrumentalists on todays regional jazz scene. An audience favorite both as a Classical and improvising pianist, he has continually evolved since his first New Mexico appearance in 2003, frequently creating new ensembles to carry out specific projects.
An Industrial Engineering graduate of Northwestern University and former Senior Consultant in a multinational firm, Jeff Brown began his life in music late
virtually from scratch at age 27. He began with Classical music, studying with Awadagin Pratt and Brazilian master Luis Carlos de Moura Castro, and has since been featured as solo recitalist and chamber musician in South America, Europe and the U.S, most recently in Obidos, Portugal, August, 2007. Other teachers include Paul Badura-Skoda and Boris Berman.
As an improviser, Mr. Brown has shared concert stages with cutting-edge artists Anthony Braxton, Dave Douglas and the ICP Orchestra, and has led his own jazz and experimental projects in performances nationwide. He was recently awarded artistic residencies at the Banff Centre in Canada and the Fondation Royaumont in France. Years of living abroad in other places such as Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and Puerto Rico add a multitude of influences that can be heard in his compositions and improvisations.
Taking part in the Jazz tradition means participating in a musical evolution
It means you cant play exactly what was played yesterday.
Were not the ones in control. We look at Improvisation as a process that works its magic on us, not vice versa.
